Reviews

Russian-born composer Lera Auerbach's "Primera Luz" ("Primordial Light") is a hauntingsix-movement journey that takes the string quartet through myriad emotional states. The musicians shape prayerful and earthy gestures, often alone, sometimes with colleagues.Much of Auerbach's writing takes the instruments to their extremes. Disembodied harmonics and ultrasoft utterances give way to yearning episodes, downward slides and impassioned outbursts. Something is always percolating beneath the surface as the musicians share phrases or travel on lonely sojourns. The piece is unsettling and beautiful, with wisps of Shostakovichlike isolation to remind the listener of the composer's roots.Donald Rosenberg Plain Dealer Music Critic
