Celso Antunes wurde 1959 in São Paulo geboren. Er studierte Dirigieren an der Musikhochschule in Köln. Von 1994 bis 1998 war er Chefdirigent des Neuen Rheinischen Kammerorchesters in Köln sowie des belgischen Neue-Musik-Ensembles Champ-d’Action (1994 – 1997), mit dem er zahlreiche Kompositionen zur Uraufführung brachte. Als künstlerischer Leiter und Chefdirigent des National Chamber Choir of Ireland prägte er dessen Entwicklung von 2002 an so entscheidend, dass die Irish Times seinen Fortgang 2007 mit den Worten bedauerte, man müsse die Jahre mit Antunes im Rückblick als ein „Goldenes Zeitalter für professionellen Chorgesang in Irland“ bezeichnen.

Celso Antunes zeichnet eine beachtliche Flexibilität aus und das belegt auch sein breit gefächertes Repertoire: Es reicht von der Chormusik der Renaissance über Orchesterwerke des 18. und 19. Jahrhunderts bis hin zu zeitgenössischer Musik, die einen Schwerpunkt seines Schaffens ausmacht. So leitete er das Nieuw Ensemble, das Ensemble Moderne und das Tippett Ensemble, dem er auch heute noch als künstlerischer Leiter vorsteht, und dirigierte Uraufführungen u.a. von Michael Tippett, Wolfgang Rihm, Jonathan Harvey, Hans Zender, Brice Pauset und Lera Auerbach.

Seit vielen Jahren schon ist Celso Antunes im europäischen Konzertleben präsent. Engagements führten ihn u.a. zu den Donaueschinger Musiktagen, dem Flanders Festival, der Musikbiennale München, dem Kurt-Weill-Fest in Dessau und November Music in s'Hertogenbosch. Der Chef des Niederländischen Rundfunkchors arbeitet regelmäßig mit dem SWR Vokalensemble Stuttgart zusammen, den BBC Singers in London und dem Vlaamse Radio Koor in Brüssel. Unter den Dirigenten, mit denen er gearbeitet hat finden sich so namhafte Künstler wie Sir Simon Rattle, Zubin Mehta, Mariss Janssons, Charles Dutoit, Peter Eötvös und Sylvain Cambreling,

Celso Antunes wird als Gastdirigent von renommierter Orchestern, Chören und Ensembles eingeladen: So leitete er u.a. die Manchester Camerata, das Gelders Orkest, die Brussels Philharmonic sowie die NDR Radiophilharmonie Hannover. Auch in seiner brasilianischen Heimat ist Celso Antunes regelmäßig als Gastdirigent zu erleben, u.a. mit der Camerata Fukuda und dem Staatlichen Sinfonieorchester São Paulo (OSESP).

2010 ist Celso Antunes erneut in der Pariser Cité de la Musique zu Gast, wo er im Juni mit dem Niederländischen Rundfunkchor und dem Orchestre de Radio France Tristan Murails „Les sept Paroles“ zur Uraufführung bringt. Auf dem City of London Festival wird er im Juli mit den BBC Singers eine Komposition von Miguel Azguime uraufführen. Außerdem leitet Celso Antunes auf den Salzburger Festspielen das SWR Vokalensemble, das dort im August Wolfgang Rihms „Quid est Deus“ präsentieren wird. Weiterhin stehen in diesem Jahr CD-Aufnahmen für Hänssler Klassik und BIS an: Eingespielt werden Werke von Joaquin Turina mit der NDR Radiophilharmonie Hannover sowie die 3. Sinfonie von Dimitri Schostakowitsch mit dem Niederländischen Rundfunkchor. Als Gastdirigent gibt Celso Antunes sein Debut mit der South Jutland Symphony in Dänemark und den niederländischen Orchestern Radio Kamer Filharmonie und Holland Symfonia.

On his second performance with the Concertgebouw Orchestra as guest conductor, 72 year-old maestro Metha generated subtle psalms, accurately shaped [Groet Omroepkoor, Cond. Celso Antunes]. Under his direction, Strawinskis score sounded noble and the performance resembled a spiritual experience.

Also with the Psalm symphony, Metha let music speak entirely for itself: Especially in the last part, when the Concertgebouw Orchestra and the sublime singing Groet Omroepkoor (Cond. Celso Antunes) seemed to melt in heavenly spheres, they created moments of unknown magic.
